I’ve been asked several times how to go about adding a Kindle-compatible ebook to your Kindle reader. Perhaps some generous author has given you an advance copy of a forthcoming book, or you’ve downloaded a Kindle-compatible ebook from a site like Smashwords or an author’s site. There are a couple of ways to do this, but here’s the one I prefer. It might seem like a lot of steps, but I promise it’s easy, and after that, adding books to your Kindle account will be as simple as sending an email.
Step 1: Go to Amazon.com and log in to your account.
Step 2: Put the cursor over the arrow next to “Your Account” and, from the drop-down menu, choose “Manage Your Content and Devices.” (You’ll be asked to log in again after clicking this link.)
Step 3: Click on “Settings.”
Step 4: Scroll down to the section that reads “Approved Personal Document E-Mail List” and, at the bottom of that section, click on “Add a new approved email address.”
Step 5: Type in your email address (the one you will use to mail the books to your Kindle account.)
Step 6: Once you’ve added your email address, scroll up just a little bit to “Send-to-Kindle Email Settings.” You’ll see a device (or more than one if you have the Kindle app on other devices) and next to your device you’ll see an @kindle.com email address. (Example: Jim’s iPad firstname.lastname@example.org) This is the email address to which you’ll mail the ebook.
Step 7: Open your email (the one you typed in in step 5.) Attach the ebook file youre sending to your Kindle (whether you bought the book from a site or received it from the author, you’ll have to download the file to your computer before attaching it to your email. You’ll probably find it in your “Downloads” folder.) Once you’ve attached the book to your email, send it to the @kindle.com address from step 6. In a few minutes, the book will be added to your Kindle library and you’ll be able to download it to your reader or app.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.
